Friends and friends-of-friends are always asking for recommendations on “cheap” places to stay in New York City.  The thing about the Big Apple is that everything is just more expensive—a decent place to stay is going to cost somewhere around $200 per night and more, depending on the season and location.  But here are some of my top picks—just know that since I live here, I haven’t actually stayed in any of these (except one).  These are culled from reviews and comments I’ve read.

East Village

Gem Hotel SoHo.  I know it says SoHo but it’s really the East Village on East Houston street near 1^st Avenue.  When it opened years ago it was a Howard Johnson’s, and a big deal as the first hotel in the area.

Chelsea

Holiday Inn Express Chelsea/Madison Sq.  Newish, modern place.  I did actually stay here late one night when doing a series of events and didn’t feel like making the trek back uptown.  Great location.  Clean.  A little noisy (walls are thin) but totally workable.

Hampton Inn Chelsea.  On w 24^th street.  Literally next door to the Tentpole NY offices.  Our client stayed here and said it’s fine.

Ace Hotel recently opened – offers everything from bunk beds to larger rooms; boutique and funky on w 29^th st

Village/Meatpacking

The Jane Hotel NY Funky spot near great neighborhoods.  Rooms are very small.  Originally built as a hotel for sailors, and where survivors of the Titanic stayed for a few days.  Rooms that share baths start at $100, and almost double for private bath.

Midtown

Affinia Dumont.  Slightly more expensive, but larger – studio suites

Pod Hotel.  Definitely a budget option – different range of rooms available; small but supposedly clean and chic.  On E 51^st street.
